Art Basel Miami wraps today, and once again, the world’s cultural elite showed up: collectors dropping seven figures on emerging artists, tech founders building collections that will end up in museums, gallerists discovering the next Basquiat. These aren’t just transactions, they’re bets on what matters next, made by people who understand that cultural stewardship means reading the room before anyone else does. They’re shaping taste, not following it.

Meanwhile, what do current royals do for art? Attend museum openings. Cut ribbons mainly for exhibitions about themselves or their ancestors. Pose for ceremonial photos. Their engagement with contemporary culture has become somewhat performative, a photo op, not patronage.
